Imagine this. You love to travel. You like to take a relaxing, leisurely pace and absorb the culture. Spain is an astonishing tapestry of quaint villages, awesome landscapes, and hospitable people. All you need is some cash, a small car, and a good guidebook.
Dear reader, you will have to take care of the cash and rental of the small car yourself, but the guidebook is right here. Want to get off the beaten path in Spain? Look no further.
The book is organized around 25 driving tours of various lengths (from 1 day to 5 days), arranged by geographic region. Each tour includes recommended sites, towns, lodgings, restaurants, and practical information. Listings are not comprehensive, but are selected by the authors based on their uniqueness and relative value. Many of the country's fantastic (and expensive) Paradores are featured. Festivals and shopping? Got that too. All of this is introduced by practical material that summarizes everything from weather to how to rent a car in Spain. It's a durable, self-contained guide, absolutely packed with all this Spanish loveliness!
Then there's the photography. All of the tours feature lovely color photographs of town and landscapes. There are good, simple color maps as well, and a more comprehensive durable pull-out sheet map is attached inside the back cover. One thing potential readers familiar with the DK Eyewitness series will want to know is this: There are no 3-D color cutaway drawings that you may have seen in other DK guides. The material in this book doesn't lend itself to that kind of illustration, because these places are about subtle contemplation rather than grandeur.
