This book is extremely well written and easy for students to read and understand. The illustrations are also excellent and help students link the microscopic to the macroscopic. The book also very clearly lays out methods for quantitative problem solving. Many well written sections and problems are related to real world applications (deep sea diving, airplane cabin pressurization, rust, soap micelles, skin cancer from sunlight calculations, cancer treatments.) If you are looking for a complicated, indecipherable, dry but comprehensive tome, then this is not the book for you. If you are interested in getting started in your study of chemistry with a book that is actually relevant and readable, then this is a great book! My students consistently give it rave reviews as well. I haven't met Prof. Tro, but if I ever do, then I will thank him for writing this book.

I ordered this book two days ago for an introductory Chemistry course and chose the 2 day shipping option. To my surprise, it arrived roughly 6 hours earlier than the estimated time (awesome!), however, it DID NOT include the online web access code for the Mastering Chemistry website. I bought the book new at around $120 or so because some of the used vendors claim that it doesn't come with the web access code. I figured the brand new ones would come with the code as if I had just purchased it from the book store on campus. Unfortunately, prior to my review there weren't any reviews that said ya or nay for this web access code, so all I had to go on was intuition. Upon arrival to my house, as previously stated, it DID NOT have the code.
After I spent a few minutes on the phone with an awesome customer service representative and we concluded that the book does NOT include the code from Amazon. He gave me a voucher for a full refund with free UPS shipping & handling via email and I will be pursuing that route and just buying/renting it locally. As for the condition of the book, it was shipped promptly after I had ordered it and like I said it was 6 hours early. The book itself was in excellent condition and you can tell it was never opened prior to me searching through the book for this elusive web access code. The customer service was very helpful and very easy to work with. A little patience and respect will go a long way in this world. I've purchased many items on Amazon before and this is the first and only item I've ever had a problem with.
DISCLAIMER: If all you need for this course is the textbook, then I would give this a five star rating. The description was a tad misleading for me, but if you need the BOOK ONLY I would recommend this for your introductory Chemistry course.
