New York Times bestselling author John C. Maxwell believes that any setback, whether professional or personal, can be turned into a step forward when you possess the right tools to turn a loss into a gain. Drawing on nearly fifty years of leadership experience, Dr. Maxwell provides a roadmap for winning by examining the eleven elements that constitute the DNA of learners who succeed in the face of problems, failure, and losses.
1. Humility - The Spirit of Learning
2. Reality - The Foundation of Learning
3. Responsibility - The First Step of Learning
4. Improvement - The Focus of Learning
5. Hope - The Motivation of Learning
6. Teachability - The Pathway of Learning
7. Adversity - The Catalyst of Learning
8. Problems - The Opportunities of Learning
9. Bad Experiences - The Perspective for Learning
10. Change - The Price of Learning
11. Maturity - The Value of Learning
Learning is not easy during down times, it takes discipline to do the right thing when something goes wrong. As John Maxwell often points out--experience isn't the best teacher; evaluated experience is.

One of the best things about John's books is that he offers practical frameworks and solutions that the reader can apply to their unique situation, and he's done it again with "Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn." The beauty of the content is that you get to learn from the stories in the book and see how you can turn a seemingly negative situation into a powerful launching pad for your next success.
There's no doubt that losing, failing, and making mistakes are painful, and John encourages you to examine that pain even further in Chapter 1 - When You're Losing, Everything Hurts. But from there he walks you through the steps of growth and learning from those mistakes in chapters focused on Humility, Reality, Responsibility, Improvement, Hope, Teachability, Maturity and more.
The most successful people in the world will tell you that the key to their success is that they took chances and failed faster and more often. The key, though, is that they learned from those experiences, refined their approach, and tried again. If you want to learn how to more critically examine your setbacks and use them as the rocket fuel to propel you toward your next success, then this book is for you.

I have read many of John Maxwell's books and have attended many of his seminars. There is nothing new here content wise, except for the way the material is arranged. The personal stories while entertaining at times, left me feeling that he is out of touch with the everyday reader. Spending $20,000 to send a passport? Seriously? Even if I could spend that much money to send a passport, I'm not sure I would write about it. The part left out of the story was how much he got for the speaking engagement. If he got $50,000 to speak at the event, dropping $20K was no big deal.
I got this book for free in exchange for a review. Normally, I'm one of those readers who has to get Maxwell books from the library or save up to purchase a copy.
If a friend was new to Maxwell, this would be a good book to give them. For the seasoned Maxwell reader, this book is going to be strangely familiar.
