To be fair, the dust jacket for the NIV True Images: The Bible for Teen Girls does offer a warning: ". . . this bible deals with mature issues that teens ages 13-16 across the world face today. Please consider reviewing the content and talking through some of the topics with your daughter." Of course the Old Testament and New Testaments contain mature subject matter which younger readers will find difficult to handle. This edition of the Bible, however, presents the Scripture in a format much like a teen magazine, and that presentation may disturb responsible adults considering their purchase of this Bible for a girl or young woman.
In writing these comments, I am not referencing the NIV translation itself. There is a great deal of discussion over its merits; many of the Amazon reviews address those issues. I am instead writing about this edition of the Bible as a product.
My overwhelming impression from this volume is that it assumes that most girls are alike in a narrow, categorized way. In one section that reads like the type of personality quiz one finds in a teen magazine. Asking "What's Your Image?" it offers personality-defining questions such as "What's on those lips of yours?" "The 'do--do tell," and "What outfit makes you feel most like you?" Another such list invites the reader to "piece together a dream man." The randomly placed glossy insert pages offer many such items.
I would have liked to have seen commentary to put descriptions in context. For example, when in Isaiah 47, the Scripture compares Babylon to a disgraced woman, it would have been helpful to see an explanation of why that image would be significant. It seems a young woman would want to know that.
As a youth pastor, I would recommend this Bible to girls who are teenagers or parents who are looking for a Bible for their teenage daughter. There are many resources inside of it that would help a young lady living in this world be all they can be for Christ and develop spiritual maturity. It is also endorsed by Youth Specialties which faithfully ministers to students and provides helps to youth pastors across the United States. Inside the New International Version text are mirror images profiles, in focus stories, truth or dare notes, love notes from God, genuine notes, book introductions, and quizzes. Let's take a moment to give you a glimpse of some of these resources.
Truth or Dare - Look around at all the variety on earth. That took some serious creativity. In fact, God created creativity itself! And He used it to make His good creation - you (Genesis 1:25).
Love Notes - My daughter, did you catch that? You were made in My image. You are worthy, not for what you do, how you look or what you own...but because I made you. - Your loving Father. How does this truth change how you view yourself (Genesis 1:27).
Mirror Images - (Genesis 3:6) Eve: The Girl Who Wants It all...Meet Eve. You probably already know a dozen girls just like her. She's the girl who has it all, She's got a boyfriend, a great body - a great life. But it doesn't seem like enough to this poor modern "Eve". She can't seem to say no to anything. When her friends tell her smoking pot will make her popular, she takes a puff. And when they make choices according to their horoscopes, she ignores her conscience and joins in. What's worse, "Eve" encourages everyone else to do the wrong thing too. {The rest of the page does a teaching to help and has a prayer}.
