Stephano Jacob Colson Notte, or Jake Colson as he now goes by, was horrified when he learned at 18 his stepfather, mother, and younger half-brother are blood sucking, mind controlling vampires (immortals). That turned to anger when he was changed after nearly dying 3 years ago. After he learned to care for himself, he walked away from his family to start a new life. This new life and career as a body guard has brought him to Nicole's doorstep. Nicole doesn't believe her string of unfortunate events is an attempt on her life but her family friend Marguerite (yep, she's matchmaking again!) does and secretly hires Jake to protect her by posing as a housekeeper/chef.
I thought Jake abandoning his family after they showed him nothing but love and patience was childish and uncalled for so my expectations weren't high for this book. Nicole's arrival changed that. Nicole married a smooth talker but once the honeymoon was over, he showed his real self and it wasn't pretty. With a gentle mental nudge from Marguerite, Nicole filed for divorce but the money grubbing husband wasn't happy. A couple of near misses later, Jake is at her house and protecting her from any more "accidents" until the divorce is final.
Nicole is sweet, has a surprising naughty side, and is Jake's lifemate so he must reveal the immortal world to her and explain what he is. Coupled with Nicole's understanding and acceptance, it finally clicks in his head that immortals aren't monsters and it's not a curse to be one. Finally! Jake's a good guy that needs a great woman to show him the error of his ways and Nicole needs a man that will cherish not use her and that's exactly what both get.
When I first picked up an Argeneau novel many, many moons ago, I fell in love with this series. In fact, this was the first series of books I bought when I got my first Kindle and I have been avidly awaiting each new release, pre-ordering them months in advance, just to make sure I would get the next book as soon as it was released and often getting up early to start reading as soon as the download is complete. I have to say that I am really glad I did that with this book.
This is the 19th book in the Argeneau Series if you include the Rogue Hunters into it, and of course I do. So, there is a formula to these stories that is generally accepted. The characters have instant attraction, fall into bed almost immediately and begin a Happily Ever After in less than a week, but lets be honest, would you really want it any other way?!?! This story is mostly this formulated story that we've come to love, but there were some exciting new aspects to this story that I wasn't expecting. The whole story has you thinking one thing, then BAM!! All of a sudden you realize you were wrong and you have to rethink half the story. It was such an interesting plot development.
I am also thrilled that the laughter was back in this story. I loved the first few books so much because there were so many times that I would laugh out loud while I was reading and I have missed that from the last couple of books. I'm glad that has returned. I know more than one person looked at me strangely while I was laughing hysterically in the lounge on campus while I was reading. Also, there are a lot of old characters back in this book, most are briefly mentioned but it was good to see some old friends.
The absolute best part of this book is Stephano/Jake.
