Oh boy, where to start... I have to admit, I was immediately intrigued when I read the free preview of this book and within a few paragraphs there was a scene involving the main character witnessing his mother doing something no one should ever have to see his mother doing. Since the main character, CJ, is some kind of gangster-god who gets away with literally dozens of murders during the course of the story, by the end of the free preview he easily deals with the man responsible for his mother's humiliation.
This is where my complaints start, the writing is just lazy and unoriginal. Most of the story is just bad people doing bad people things, and having to deal with the consequences, usually by doing more bad stuff. When CJ has to deal with a rival crew early on in the story, he simply picks up a machine gun from his apartment, immediately finds the guys he is looking for (conveniently all standing together), mows them down "Call of Duty"-style, and gets away. No drama, no chases, at no point is there any doubt of his survival. Repeat this process countless times and it ultimately makes for a fairly boring story.
I do have to tip my hat to Ca$h for a couple of things:
1) The whole thing is written in ghetto slang, even the narration, which greatly enhances the entertainment factor.
2) About midway through the story, two characters are discussing books, and one of them glowingly praises the prominent author known as...Ca$h. Stop and think about that for a minute. It's like Juliet asking Romeo "Have you read this Shakespeare chap, he's bloody marvelous!"
3) Switching from third-person to first-person narration halfway through. Why not!
