I have read many books on bible study, but this one is great for anyone! For a new Christian, it gives a helpful and balanced foundation. For a Christian who needs some encouragement to reconnect with scripture, it is an excellent source of motivation and direction. For an experienced bible student, it helps bring things back to the basics and teaches us again of our dependance on the Spirit and humble place before God's life transforming Word.
By John M. Mabus
Initially the author builds a strong case for studying the Bible from one's heart, not just mentally. He explains that figuratively, the heart in the Bible refers to out innermost thoughts, emotions, and will. So in approaching the subject we do so in a spiritual sense. He contrasts the two disciples on the Emmaus Road who had their hearts burn within them as the risen Lord Jesus opened the Scriptures to them with the Pharisees and Saducees who limited their understanding of God's Word to the mental aspect.

He makes an excellent point that God gives certain people a supernatural ability to teach the Word, as explained in Romans 12. Therefore, indiidual Bible study needs to be enhanced by insight gained from reputable teachers. Gifts are meant to be used. The teacher is blessed in the giving and the student is edified and instructed as a recipient.

In situations where the Bible does not address a specific issue believers face, principles are given that can be applied. God's Spirit agrees with His Word. This is also a gift of God the enhance's a Christian's life.

Several helpful Internet sites are given to assist those wanting to followp on his advice. He aptly warns against putting too much emphasis on any one teacher, noting that spiritually mature Bible teachers will encourage students to cross check their teachings and verify for themselves the authenticity of what they're taught. With that in mind, I disagree with the author about portions of Scripture speaking to an individual. Context is vitally important to accuracy, however Jesus Himself used portions of Scripture. I learned this from Billy Joe Dougherty. The Holy Spirit can quicken a truth to an individual that another person reading the same passage will miss. Overall this is a nice addition to one's library on Bible study, written in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. I finished it in one setting.
