The Heart of Leadership: Becoming a Leader People Want to Follow Description

Review

“For those who have the courage and the character to embrace the radical nature of heart-based leadership, the rewards are great. But those rewards are not always tangible nor are they guaranteed. They cannot be calculated like a bonus or a 401(k) program. That may be why relatively few leaders choose to lead this way. But perhaps this book will begin to change that. I certainly hope so.”
—from the foreword by Patrick Lencioni, President, The Table Group, and author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and The Advantage

“The most important leadership tool you have is not your education, your experience, or your know-how. It’s your heart. In this book, Mark provides a clear prescription for using yours to become the kind of leader people want to follow.”
—Michael Hyatt, New York Times bestselling author and former CEO, Thomas Nelson Inc.

“Mark once again demonstrates the power of a simple story well told. The Heart of Leadership will serve leaders around the world for decades to come.”
—Dr. Henry Cloud, leadership consultant, psychologist, and bestselling author of Boundaries and Necessary Endings

“The Heart of Leadership is a delightfully surprising read. Mark Miller’s wisdom shines in his ability to convey profound truths simply and clearly. This book propels leadership beyond strategies and techniques to its most authentic form—who you are.”
—Dan Rockwell, author and owner of the Leadership Freak blog, consultant, and pastor

“Mark Miller has crafted a masterwork. Too many books on leadership are about selfishly getting ahead. This book addresses the leader’s heart. By addressing the heart, you do get ahead, but it’s a more satisfying journey.”
—Nancy Duarte, author of Resonate and CEO, Duarte Designs

“This book will help you reach your leadership potential, espousing good principles that most learn only through the school of hard knocks—and many never learn at all.”
—Ron Wallace, former President, UPS International

“Mark Miller has done it again! Another outstanding book—this time on the most important aspect of leadership: who you are as a leader. If you focus only on skills, you are ignoring 90 percent of what makes a great leader. Through an engaging parable, Mark reveals the five qualities of leadership character. And the good news is, they can be learned. Read this book, discover what they are, and take them to heart!”
—Jesse Lyn Stoner, coauthor of the international bestseller Full Steam Ahead!

“The Heart of Leadership addresses the primary stumbling block for leaders—themselves! If you want to improve how you lead others, you must first improve how you lead yourself. This great little book shows you how.”
—Daniel S. Harkavy, CEO and Executive Coach, Building Champions, Inc.

“The Heart of Leadership extends and deepens the bestselling leadership models pioneered by Mark Miller. This book is clear, compelling, and of real practical value. Keep it on hand—a small investment of time will yield a lifetime of dividends, in your life as well as in your career.”
—Jeff Rosensweig, Associate Professor of International Business and Finance and Director, Global Perspectives Program, Goizueta Business School, Emory University

“There’s a difference between potential leaders with raw talent and great leaders with real influence. Mark’s book reveals the foundational difference—it’s all about leadership character.”
—Tony Morgan, author and Chief Strategic Officer and founder of TonyMorganLive.com.

“Mark Miller’s The Heart of Leadership immediately creates a place for personal discovery. As I read each page, I was no longer thinking of Blake, the main character, but myself. Blake’s journey of discovery became my own. This is about the ‘life’ of leadership and how it reaches within and without, having profound and long-lasting impact. It’s about being unselfishly driven and highly motivated. It is about how others within the workplace and within our lives benefit from our personal resolve to lead from the perspective that others matter.”
—Clifton L. Taulbert, author of Eight Habits of the Heart and President, The Freemount Corporation/Building Community Institute

“There are so many buzzwords in business that claim to be the answer to all leadership woes. The truth is that leadership is all about the people, and to have success with people, read The Heart of Leadership, and watch your leadership soar to a whole new level.”
—Todd Nielsen, author and COO, JMARK Business Solutions

Those who have read one of more of Mark Miller's previously published books already know that he has superb reasoning and writing skills in combination with the talents of a raconteur. What we have in this volume is a fable about today's business world. There are a setting, a cast of characters, themes, a plot, conflicts and tensions, and eventually resolution. The focus is on Blake Brown (age 28) whose career and personal life currently consist of frustrated aspirations, self-doubt, and - thus far - unfulfilled potentialities. His future at Dynastar is uncertain. He sets out on a quest to find out why "leaders are different." His mentor (Debbie Brewster) and five of his late father's associates are involved in the process. Details are best revealed within the narrative, in context. However, I am comfortable sharing a few of what I consider to be Miller's most important insights.

First, Miller is convinced - and I agree - that leaders have a certain presence that attracts interest and, over time, helps them to earn respect and trust. Call it "it," call it whatever you like. For whatever reasons, we feel something special in their presence. Now I am not talking about charisma. My own opinion (perhaps Miller agrees) is that charisma resembles an expensive fragrance. It has a pleasing aroma but should not be consumed. The leaders Miller has in mind are genuine, authentic, and consistent in terms of their affirmations and, especially, their behavior.

Also, I agree with Miller that all organizations need effective leadership at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.
I have long been a fan of Mark Miller`s work and when I found out I had the opportunity to be on the launch team for his new book "The Heart of Leadership" I couldn't wait to write this review.
If you have read any of Miller's recent work, you know that he has a unique way of building a story around the premise of the book and in effect, brings the lessons and the story itself to life. The Heart of Leadership is a follow up, at least as the story goes, to "Great Leaders Grow" (read my review of Great Leaders Grow).
Blake, who got off to a great start as a young leader now finds himself stuck. Stuck in his job and stuck as a leader. He turns back to his mentor Debbie, who had previously been mentored by Blake's father before he passed away.

Debbie introduces Blake to 5 professionals that take Blake on a journey to find what he has been missing to take his leadership to the next level. He has been missing The HEART of Leadership. So let's take a look at just what it is that makes up The Heart of Leadership.

HUNGER FOR WISDOM
Leaders recognize that if they want to be effective over the long haul, they need to be life long learners. They need to commit to not only increasing their knowledge but their relational skills as well. Be self confident and consistent in your beliefs and values but always be open to input, new ideas and the views and opinions of others. We can always learn, even in our failures and difficult times.

EXPECT THE BEST
Miller states it very well; "To expect the best is an attitude, a belief, a choice, a lifestyle and a trait that virtually every successful leader possesses. We believe the best about others and about ourselves." What a powerful statement.
