There really are not enough superlatives to express how Godzilla fans will feel about this amazing comic. Anyone familiar with James Stokoe's work on the impossible-to-find comic Orc Stain already have some idea of what they can expect from this exceptional and innovative creator. Stokoe's drawing style is reminiscent of a hyper-kinetic and intensely detailed Ralph Bakshi crossbred with characterizations of a Hayao Miyazaki nightmare enhanced by the earth tone coloring of a divinely rendered dawn (how's that for superlative?). The Godzilla of Stokoe's tale is a savage, rampaging monster whose dead white eyes betray the ruthlessly random nature of the destruction he causes. His long, jagged dorsal spikes glow with barely contained nuclear fire soon to be mercilessly unleashed in lethal blasts of atomic breath.
Stokoe's story follows Ota Murakami who as a young soldier faces off against Godzilla in one of the monster's first landfalls. After barely surviving the attack he makes Godzilla's complete defeat his life's goal. Again and again over a period of 50 years Murakami challenges the unbeatable force of nature that is Godzilla. As Murakami gets older his weapons improve and he becomes a formidable foe for the monster, yet the Kaiju world is not so easily divided into opposing forces of good and evil. All of the great monsters including Mothra, Ghidorah, and Gigan (with many more) make appearances with differing degrees of antagonism or benevolence. Always Godzilla remains, year after year, the undisputed King of the Monsters and the ultimate life or death challenge of Murakami.
I mainly just wanted to add another 5-star review for this GORGEOUS & BREATH-TAKING graphic-novel. This graphic-novel collects the mini-series Godzilla: HCW Issues #1-5 and holy hell it is that good. Let's just say you can buy this just for the artwork alone and it is easily worth the price of admission, but wait... this story gives this book purpose and a memorable narrative, that gives you even more of your money's worth!
The main-character Ota Murakami, also accompanied by friend Kentaro, has a near-death experience with the big-man himself. Dedicating almost a half-century of his life to the terrifying, powerful, legendary, Radiating-Breathing-Lizard, known as GODZILLA. Ota's perspective changes throughout the many years of his life and experiences with Godzilla.
The story holds your interest, until suddenly the first other monster appears, which I will admit gave me a surprising jolt of enthusiasm. I wish I could have some of these pages as posters. A whole cast of monsters make appearances, but due to it being a mini-series, some of your favorite monsters can't receive a large amount of pages. That's my only complaint and I wish the story and battles could of been expanded a bit more. The 124 pages you do get are extremely impressive though. I'll spoil the monsters at the bottom of this review, but it is was so amazingly cool and surprising to see each one pop-up on the page.
I felt like a 5 year-old kid again reading this, watching all the Godzilla films on VHS. Highly recommended for all Godzilla fans, or if you want to see James Stokoe write and draw a incredible mini-series. This graphic-novel does the King of Monsters proud and I'm seriously considering buying a copy for a friend. Oh and I'll mention the great-art again.
