This was an outstanding genealogy guide! Every page had information that I am now able to apply to help me work through the many genealogy challenges that I have. For example, searching every page of an enumeration district in the 1930 Census for Texas McCulloch County resulted in my locating two of my grandfather's brothers. This helped me move to the next challenges.
I have been involved with genealogy since the 1970s, and this was one of the very best guides I have ever used.

A slim volume, which would be even slimmer if the authors had spent less time on their 'brick wall' analogy and had used more concise examples. For example, the authors suggest building a timeline and include a 4+ page personal exhibit. Three pages of magazine front covers also seemed excessive. All, or at least most of the examples were one of the author's personal research, which leaves the reader wondering how broad the authors experience really is. Additionally, the examples focus on early 20th century America, which seem less deserving of 'advanced' techniques than the early 19th century America or European centric problems with which I am faced. Researchers with Asian or African backgrounds will find even less help, I fear.
I did find the section on DNA a worthwhile read (in fact, I read it twice) because it explained in concrete terms what DNA test can and can't do for the genealogist.
Understand that the points made by the authors are valid and worth repeating. The book just could have been very much more concise, but then, it wouldn't have been a book at all.
