The Scout's Dutch Oven Cookbook Description

Review

"Everything you need to serve healthy, tasty, and satisfying Dutch oven meals (including desserts) in the great outdoors. Tim and Christine, longtime friends of scouting, give you more than just recipes. In fun, easy-to-read prose, their guides cover every aspect of Dutch oven cookery: planning, preparation, cleanup, and safety, as well as helpful back-of-the-book lists, terms, and resources that can make a Dutch-oven novice a Dutch-oven chef. A must for every scouter and scout, too!"

—John R. Clark, Managing Editor, Scouting magazine

"I have been scouting and cooking in Dutch ovens for over 25 years, and I think this is a fantastic book for beginners as well as for experienced Dutch oven chefs. Recipes are clear and easy to follow. Also included are suggestions on how to select and maintain your cast iron. This collection of field-tested recipes from scouts and scouters all across the country includes colorful stories and experiences relating to how the recipe came to be. Very well organized, lots of tips and tricks, and is sure to make your grubmaster a hit at the next campout!"

—John Foster, District Commissioner, Kings Peak District, Utah National Parks Council

"The introduction is a comprehensive guide to the dos and don’ts of Dutch oven cooking. It is a great 'single source' for what you need to know about cooking, safety, care, and differences among Dutch ovens.

—Vincent P. Cozzone, Scout Executive/CEO, Venture Crew Advisor Crew 149, Waterloo, Belgium; Boy Scouts of America Transatlantic Council

"Christine's and Tim's books are a wealth of cooking and camping knowledge that every novice and experienced camper/hiker should not do without. The recipes are clear and easy to follow and the preliminary "how-to" tips are invaluable for the planning work and safety advice, in order to "Be Prepared" for all possibilities. I think that everyone wanting to learn more about outdoor cooking should run out and get a copy for their cooking library!"

—Michael Kaiserauer, Council Training Chair, Boy Scouts of America Transatlantic Council, Berlin, Germany

As a Scout leader tasked with assisting the youth in planning the meals for our camps and week-long adventures this summer I was looking for a resource that included trusted recipes. I was fortunate to find this book and I'm excited to share some of the valuable information I've learned through reading it.

The book starts with a good overview for the Newbie. While I've used Dutch ovens for years, I found this information useful to review. There's also a chapter reviewing basic skills, followed by Caring for your Dutch Oven, then Important Accessories and a Step by Step tutorial. I enjoyed their review of ways to clean and optimize the camp experience. I often cook with Dutch ovens at home with easy access to a clean kitchen so this was a good reminder.

The bulk of the book is the recipes. The recipes are organized by meal. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and then Side Dishes, Breads and Deserts. Each Recipe includes a handy rating called "Challenge Scale" with most easy, a few moderate and some difficult to provide room to grow your cooking skills. I also like that the required equipment is included for each recipe, including which size Dutch Oven to use. The number of coals and how to use them is also included on each recipe. In some of my other books you are left to determine which size oven fits best.

I plan to use the book as not only a purchasing guide (when buying the ingredients), but a cooking guide in camp. I'll make a copy of the individual recipe we are making and have it there for the boys to use when preparing and cooking the meal. With the coal counts and directions right there with each recipe it'll be better than books which show a temperature and require looking up coal counts in tables.
