I hadn't used SQL Server since 2007 and I needed a reintroduction. This isn't so much in-depth as it is a taste of all the things you can do with SQL Server, including new features. You can download the sample code but I find it more worth the effort to type it in myself, so that I can think the processes through while I type (I just understand and learn better that way). None of the samples are very long so it's not difficult.
You should have a little bit of familiarity with SQL Server - not a lot, this will be too simple otherwise.
I almost gave it four stars instead of five for the errata - the sample code seems to be free of error and I had to go to it once when I didn't understand the error messages I was getting. Nonetheless, it was the right book for me to jump into this new version after years of not using SQL Server and get my feet wet again.

This is a book for beginners. It starts you with a description of the SQL Server and detailed installation instructions. From there is walks you through the basics in an easy to understand fashion. I am half way through the book and have learned so much.
