Author: Wendell Odom | Language: English | ISBN: 0789750430 | Format: EPUB

Cisco CCENT ICND1 100-101 Network Simulator Description

The most effective router and switch simulator for hands-on CCENT skills enhancement

Cisco CCENT ICND1 100-101 Network Simulator that helps you develop and improve hands-on configuration and troubleshooting skills without the investment in expensive lab hardware. This state-of-the-art, interactive simulation software enables you to practice your networking skills with more than 250 structured labs designed to help you learn by doing, the most effective method of learning. Topics covered include router and switch navigation and administration, Ethernet LAN switches, VLANs and trunking, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting, operating Cisco routers, learning IPv4 routes with OSPFv2, configuring and verifying host connectivity, subnet design, VLSM, route summarization, IPv4 Access Control Lists (ACL), Network Address Translation (NAT), IPv6 routing, and network troubleshooting.

Experience realistic network device responses as you perform each lab, which include detailed instructions, topology diagrams, critical-thinking questions, hints, and answers. Working through the labs, you will quickly become proficient with all the common Cisco IOS version 15 router and switch commands on the CCENT exam. Choose from more than 250 labs organized by lab type or by topic. Track your progress with the lab status indicator, and use the new search feature to search for commands and keywords. Review lab objectives and step-by-step instructions within each lab, opening hints and tips sections that help you when you get stuck. Record your observations on device performance in interactive tables. Enter answers to critical thinking questions and get instant feedback to verify your work. Access performance reports in this easy-to-navigate grade history screen, which store all your attempts on each lab. View device configuration details, lab question performance, time to complete each lab, and CLI activity for each device in every lab. Export lab results to PDF files for easy sharing.

Unlike other simulators on the market, the lab scenarios included in the Cisco CCENT ICND1 100-101 Network Simulator are far more complex, challenging you to learn how to perform real-world network configuration and troubleshooting tasks.

I found this product to be extremely helpful. I'm currently in the process of re-certifying my CCNA based on the updated exams recently released by Cisco.

I've been a fan of Mr. Odom's for at least a decade now. I didn't have his and Mr. Wilkinson's new ICND1 and 2 books, but already having a reasonable grasp of networking theory (I'm a Cisco Academy instructor), I felt this sim functioned great as a stand-alone practice platform. The directions for carrying out the labs are clear, and walk you through step-by-step.

To me, it seems like the IP addressing drills this simulator contains are worth the price alone (yes, IP versions 4 and 6 are both included). Many would-be CCNAs struggle with that subject.

It also contains challenging router and switch labs which are very realistic. For example, when you turn on a router, the router does it's POST just as in the real world. Little details like this may not sound like much, but for those who don't get enough time on physical routers, every little emphasis on realism can help them to feel more comfortable when they do encounter the physical counterparts. I'm still amazed that subjects such as OSPF, which until a few years ago were the domain of CCNP exams, are now tested at the CCNA level. Not to worry though, this software has you covered and won't leave you unprepared.

Personally, I found the labs that covered troubleshooting were the most helpful. Troubleshooting is the real money-maker in this industry, and those skills can't be overvalued.

Complaints? Hmm, not many. Unfortunately, there is no way that I found to make up your own labs; you have the pre-assigned labs only. Also, it would be nice if the step by step instructions could be hidden somehow, and instead just a task given.
My first impression of the simulator was not good. I tried installing it first on my Apple Macbook Pro and had issues that I still have not been able to solve even after restarting the process several times. I decided to give the simulator a try on Windows to see if things would be any better and they were, A LOT BETTER.

The installation process on my Windows workstation was quick and easy. The installer gives you the typical options of changing the default install path and placing icons in various places like your quick launch bar or desktop. Once the installer finishes, you are ready to rock and roll.

PearsonIT did a wonderful job of providing a very clean and easy to use interface for the simulator. It’s very intuitive and I didn’t have any issues navigating around. The instructions found inside of the labs are in-depth and also offer helpful hints in certain scenarios. I was very impressed about the overall attention to detail.

Key features of the simulator in my opinion include the ability to quickly restart the lab through the use of a button at the top of the interface. This provides a quick way to rinse and repeat a lab. You can also submit problems to PearsonIT through the use of a button that gathers information about the current lab you’re working on and the OS of your system (in my case, it correctly gathered Windows 7). The lab simulator also keeps a record of what labs you have started by showing whether they are “In-progress” or “Completed” from the home screen. The feature I’m most excited about is the grading reports. It provides detailed information on whether you passed, the reasoning for your pass, when you completed the lab, and how long it took to complete it.
