When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up Description

Review

I was one of four sons and the father of three, never wanting for great role models. As the grandfather of three granddaughters, however, I'm constantly scouring the media landscape for true stories of women my young beloveds can aspire to emulate. When Others Shuddered fills the bill. I love everything about this book, from the women Jamie Janosz chose to the quirky design, and from the stories themselves to the resolve they inspire in me. Imagine the impact such a work can have on the lives of young women.

Jerry B. Jenkins, Novelist & Biographer, Owner, Christian Writers Guild

Warning: This book might just change your life. These women will inspire you to ask God that your life might count for His kingdom-whatever the cost. No woman is too young or too old, too poor or too rich to become a mighty vessel in the hands of the Lord. "Here am I Lord send me!"

Dr. Juli Slattery, Clinical psychologist, Author, President and Co-founder of Authentic Intimacy, MBI Trustee

From the Back Cover

What did God do through eight ordinary women?

What can He do through you?

Travel back in time to turn-of-the-century America. Skirts trailed the floor, hats were a must, and corsets were commonplace. People traveled by horse and carriage, locomotive, or ship. The first skyscrapers were built. The World's Fair arrived in Chicago.

Life was swiftly changing in the United States, but for most, it was also difficult. Men and women flooded the cities in a desperate search for work. Former slaves fled north seeking freedom and education. Crime began to rise as brothels and saloons became commonplace in American cities.

It was in this world that Fanny Crosby, Mary McLeod Bethune, Nettie McCormick, Sarah Dunn Clarke, Emma Dryer, Virginia Asher, Evangeline Booth, and Amanda Berry Smith lived and worked and served. They were ordinary women called to serve God. They followed His leading, risking their own safety and reputation. In doing so, they changed the world forever.

The stories of these eight historic, faithful women will change your life as well as you see what God can do through the willing hearts of ordinary women.

They prayed with prostitutes. They confronted gangsters. They entered tawdry saloons. In each place, with each person, they sang, preached, celebrated, and applied The Word of God. From the first page, I—a man—wanted to be like these women. But as Jamie says, they were “ordinary,” folks just like me and you. Jamie’s real interest is not simply to tell you their story, but to live their story. Jamie Janosz has given us this, her storied thesis, in her good work When Others Shuddered: Eight Women who Refused to Give Up (Moody, 2014).

I winced as read of life’s difficulties for women like Nettie McCormick. Sacrifice marked the life of Sarah Dunn Clark as she lived with the people she served. We even discover The Spirit of God used Clark’s preaching to bring the famed evangelist Billy Sunday to faith in Christ. The women often worked alone in their respective vocations, whether widowed or single. Amanda Smith stands as a beacon to African-American women everywhere in her tireless service of her Savior. Her commitment to Bible teaching touched not only Chicago but Europe, Africa, and Asia. She reached multitudes with God’s Word and touched the hearts of all who knew her. Virginia Asher figuratively “lit a torch” for others to follow. I personally have a special place in my heart for The Salvation Army and was thrilled to read Evangeline Booth’s story: Booth left a rich legacy serving the poor. Mary Bethune cheered my soul as I read of her deep desire to learn Scripture. Then what a delight to learn she to graced the White House halls (178-79)! Bethune left a Christian influence in the position created for her: Office of Minority Affairs.
History has largely been written by men. When we think of heroes of the Christian faith, most of the examples that immediately come to mind are men who have changed the world through their commitment to their faith in Jesus. However, the truth is that many of the movements, organizations, and historic events that have happened throughout history, there have been extraordinary women who are responsible for their success and creation. In her new book, When Others Shuddered, author Jamie Janosz introduces us to eight such women from the turn of the century (late 1800's-early 1900's) who turned their world upside down with their passion, zeal, and obedience to carry out the vision that God had planted within them.

The book is divided into three sections: Women and Education, Women and Missions, and Women and Politics and in each section, Janosz takes us deep into the extraordinary lives of women like Fanny Crosby, Emma Dryer, and Evangeline Booth, and allows us to peer into the struggles and tribulations that these women faced as they pursued their callings as well as the remarkable impact that each woman had on the world for the glory of God and the good of all people.

This book is definitely needed and is a must read for all Evangelical Christians, a group of people who all too often forgets that our faith lies on the backs of thousands of women who refused to cave in to societies often oppressive posture towards them and worked diligently to bring about the change and transformation that others only dreamed about. This book is an easy read and is incredibly well written (Janosz is an expert communicator!) and draws the reader into the lives of each of the extraordinary women whose stories are told.
