I took the survey exam yesterday and thought you might be interested in my thoughts:
Study Materials:
* Surveying Principles for Civil Engineers by Cuomo
If you are only going to get one book, this is the book to get. It is brief and a good representation of what will be on the exam. The problems with this book are that A) nothing regarding astronomy was on the exam and B) I felt unprepared for some of the questions regarding the differences between what a PE can legally survey and what a PLS can legally survey.
* Surveying Principles and Applications, 7th edition, by Kavana.
I bought this as a reference book and because it only cost $17 used on Amazon. It is much too long-winded for studying for this exam, but made for a decent reference.
* 120 Solved Surveying Problems by Boniface
These questions were quite different in character from the exam, but it was good to have the extra practice problems.
* Civil Surveying Sample Exams by Boniface
I didn't really like this book. I took one of the 2 practice exams in this book as a diagnostic for the exam, and doing so hurt me more than helped. The real exam is very time constrained, almost every question is based on a picture, and the questions are fairly straight forward. This book's sample exam was very time-unconstrained and has super tricky problems which trained me to read the questions slowly and carefully.
