I'm a poker player that you have never heard of. I'm no one special but I am a winning player.
I have over 100 poker books in my library and this is the first one I've ever been compelled to write a review on.
Since reading "Poker Plays You Can Use" by Doug Hull, I have plugged some leaks in my game and my win rate is starting to go up. It's also made poker more fun for me.
Mr. Hull has put together many scenarios in his book, scenarios you will see almost every time you're at the poker table, that are good spots to make bluffs and semi-bluffs. You see these situations over and over.
The illustrations are presented in a way that you can plainly see every aspect of the hands being discussed. Again, these are situations you see over and over. You will recognize most of these situations and probably find that you have folded hands that you could have won if you would have taken a different approach.
If you follow his advice on planning your hands, you will find that your decisions will be easier and you will have a much better understanding of why you are playing the hand the way you are against the different types of opponents.
When discussing classifying opponents, rather than saying do this against a certain type of player the book gives you tendencies to watch for in your opponents that form patterns you can easily exploit.
The book gives you 24 missions designed to take you out of your comfort zone and give you a logical, framework to improve your game slowly. Mission 2 is one of my favorites: I will never, under any circumstance, limp pre-flop. It does not matter if every player at the table has limped in before you and you are on the Button with JTs. Raise or fold.
