New from Jessica Beck, the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Donut Mysteries, The Classic Diner Mysteries, and The Ghost Cat Mysteries.
ASSAULT AND BATTER, Book 11 in the Donut Mystery Series!
When Emily Hargraves tells Suzanne that she’s marrying Max, her ex-husband, Suzanne is happy enough for her, but when Jude Williams, one of Emily’s old flames, decides to light the ceremony up, someone decides to extinguish his flame before he can act. Was it Max, the groom-to-be; Peter, his best man; Lisa, the woman Jude had been dating; her jealous husband, Frank; or perhaps it was Reggie Nance, a man who had reasons of his own to want to see Jude dead? Suzanne and Grace must act quickly and solve the murder before someone else ends up missing the reception, permanently.

Max is getting remarried, and his new bride asks Suzanne to be in the wedding. Before the nuptials happen, an old boyfriend of the bride's returns to town, and is shortly murdered. While solving this crime, Suzanne tries to deal with a boyfriend whose job takes him far out of state.
This book of the Donut Shop mysteries just was not as exciting and interesting as the other books in this series. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as expected. Suzanne's attitude of superiority to Grace when they were sleuthing just annoyed me.( Although I was glad to see a character actually worried about fallout, after questioning so many people.) I just felt like maybe the author was trying too hard to flesh out characters. Also, I wasn't a fan of the author's very obvious reference to her other series, trying to boost real sales. Maybe, for me, the series has gotten a little stale.

Like what appears to be most of the other reviews, I'm not liking this new format. The shorter book is (1) the same cost as what I paid for the longer books, (2) lacks depth and character development and (3) is just fluff. Her previous books were realistic and just more entertaining. I never tried out the recipes, so the lessening of those doesn't mean much to me, but spending as much as I would on a full-fledged book and getting what amounts to a novella that would normally cost a couple of books - and with poorly-developed characters - not my cup of tea. This will be my last book as long as this "new-and-improved" format continues, I'm afraid.
