About the Author
Geoff Johns is an award-winning writer and one of the most popular contemporary comic book writers today. Johns is the author of The New York Times bestselling graphic novels Aquaman: The Trench, Blackest Night, Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War, Justice League: Origin, Superman: Brainiac and Batman: Earth One which hit #1 on the bestseller list. He is also known for transforming Green Lantern into one of the most critically and commercially successful franchises in comics.
Johns was born in Detroit and studied media arts, screenwriting, and film at Michigan State University. After moving to Los Angeles, he became an assistant to Richard Donner, director of Superman: The Movie. He and his mentor Donner later co-wrote Superman: Last Son featuring the return of General Zod.
Johns has written for various other media, including episodes of Smallville, Arrow and Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, for which he was nominated along with his co-writers for an Emmy. He is the Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment and resides in Los Angeles, California.

As with other universe shattering events under Green Lantern architect Geoff Johns in almost 9 years, the mythology of entire Emotional Spectrum has lead to some high points. Sinestro Corps, Blackest Night, and War of the Green Lanterns have all been large and successful events to further the GL tapestry. Now we have the penultimate arc before Geoff Johns and his fellow GL writers leave Hal Jordan and friends behind, that is the current event, Rise of the Third Army.

To refresh your memory, since the beginning of the New 52, the Guardians have gotten tired of dealing with the disobedience of Hal Jordan and their current Lanterns since the events of Sinestro Corp War. Since the Guardians failed with their first army billions of years, the Manhunters, because of a glitch in their software. Then came the living beings that are the current second GL Corp, but their emotion and free will has gotten out of hand. So the Guardians set into motion events for the entire GL Corps and its Earth lanterns (Hal, Guy, John, and Kyle) methods to distract or take them out of the way of their grand plan of creating a third army that has no emotions, free will, and free thought.
The third army are faceless beings who are not only difficult to kill, but once they touch a living being long enough, and become another mindless monster under the control of the Guardians. The only ones who can stop this threat are out of the picture.
"The Rise of the Third Army" was originally spread across Green Lantern Annual #1, Green Lantern #13-16, Green Lantern Corps #13-16, Green Lantern: New Guardians #13-16, Red Lanterns #13-16, Purple Lanterns (sorry, strike that), and Green Lantern Corps Annual #1. The individual stories are repackaged into some semblance of order in this volume.
As the creepy blue-skinned Guardians descend into madness, they create a big blue-skinned mouthless creature and task it with assembling an army by assimilating its members ("one mind, one flesh") with a view to creating absolute order via the destruction of free will. To do this, the creature and its minions literally rip the hearts out of people (for reasons that go unexplained but probably have something to do with the coolness of the resulting gory artwork). The creature seeks out rednecks on Earth (and perhaps rednecks on other planets), either because they are in plentiful supply or easy to assimilate, having not much brainpower to begin with. Cut to Washington where Barack Obama is wondering where all the Green Lanterns have gone, a question made relevant by the news that suspected terrorist Simon Baz (who is clearly guilty of street racing) has been busted out of Guantanamo by a Green Lantern ring that is apparently offended by illegal detentions. The ring gives Baz a GL uniform but a ridiculously muscular version of the Justice League wants to strip it from him.
The story is chock full of Lanterns -- the entire Rainbow Coalition of Lanterns is represented -- as well as other characters from the colorful Lantern universe.
