Let me start by stating that my 6 year old is a very quick learner and he has had the equivalent of 2 years of piano already.
I was somewhat disappointed by this book, I don't think you should pay more than $8 for it. I was hoping for more songs and notes, but this book is very limited. It starts by learning two 3 string chords and one four string chord with strumming. Then it moves to 7 single notes A-G on string 6 through 3. I think there are two better options below:
I actually prefer the Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1: Book/CD Pack because it has more parts of songs, and it starts out with the single notes on string 5 and 6 to allow newbies to practice without the frustration of chords. Later it teaches more single notes, 10, on all strings. It also has many more chords than this book with many more tunes. What I really like about the Guitar Method Book 1 is that it gives new learners time to practice on the single notes before trying simple chords. It also takes them through a pretty solid foundation to start playing songs for practice. This book would be better for older children (8-9 years and older).
For younger children (5-7), I think the Alfred Complete Kids guitar book Kid's Guitar Course Complete (Book, Enhanced CD & DVD) (Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course)is a much better book and value as with much more instruction than Hal's Guitar for Kids, and more suited for the young learners.
