The Bride Says No: The Brides of Wishmore Description

New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell returns with a delicious new series, The Brides of Wishmore

What happens when a bride says no?

He is the bastard son of a duke, arrogant, handsome, a little bit dangerous, and, of course, one of the most sought-after bachelors in London. He is also about to be publically jilted by some chit of a girl! Blake Stephens' pride isn't about to let him be humiliated, so he charges after his bride to the wilds of Scotland, determined to bring her to the altar.

What happens when the heart says yes?

He is promised to one woman, but discovers his soul stirred by . . . the chit's sister! Lady Aileen Davidson's reputation was ruined ages ago, which is why she's buried herself in the country, but her fiery spirit and bold beauty threaten to bring Blake to his knees, making him wonder if he has proposed to the wrong lass.

And now he must make a choice: marry for honor . . . or marry for love?

Blake Stephens is the bastard son of a duke. He is handsome, wealthy, and acknowledged, but has never felt secure in his position. When his father tells him to marry Tara Davidson, daughter to an earl to cement his place in society, he proposes. Unfortunately, Tara regrets her acceptance, realizing she loves the boy she left back in Scotland, and skips town two days before the wedding. She runs home to her divorced older sister Aileen, who's been living quietly on the family estate since the scandal of the divorce. Both the earl and Blake follow Tara home. The earl wants the family connection to the duke, and Blake doesn't want to be humiliated. Aileen backs up her sister's decision, due to her own nightmare marriage, but Tara is immature and selfish and keeps changing her mind. Ruary, the man she loves, has gotten engaged to another, and she doesn't want to be left with no one. She tries to change Ruary's mind, while telling Blake she will honor her engagement. In the meantime, Blake and Aileen have fallen in love, but feel compelled to honor the original engagement as well. I have seen this plot before, and it always annoys me. The logic of honoring an engagement after the bride has bolted, with the groom fully aware of her attempts to seduce her old suitor, makes no sense to me. Tara's constant flip flopping between possible grooms is irritating, and the tolerance she is shown by her sister and betrothed is even more so. Tara is aware of the attachment between them so only an imbecile would expect anything but a disastrous marriage from such a situation. She still holds Blake to his promise, however. Things eventually work out, and there is another book after this to continue the saga. The book wasn't bad, but not one of my favorites.

VINE VOICE
I generally like Cathy Maxwell but her last few books haven't worked for me. I wanted to like this new series but I couldn't stay interested in the storyline. A spoiled younger sister and a martyr of an older sister in a love quadrangle should have been more engaging than it was. I gave up on the book after a half dozen attempts. It reminded me of Juliana Grey's books (also not my thing). Bad match of reader and book.
