This novel isn't just about the south--it's OF the south. The rhythms of speech and the cadences of language in the descriptions place you firmly in a real world that is recognizable to anyone who's ever been south of the Mason Dixon line, and would convey the world beautifully to anyone who has not. King does a great job in yielding up the world itself and then populates it with interesting characters, especially the protagonist, who faces a dilemma that is familiar and relatable -- how to find your place in a new group -- yet becomes progressively more unnerving, even sinister. The echoes of Rebecca will resonate with those familiar with that work, but the suspense and emotional stakes of Moonrise itself will ring true for all readers. We root for Helen to unlock the secrets that seem to deny her entry into her new husband's old life, and hold our breath that doing so will not come at too great a price.

I LOVED this novel. This book kept me up till 5:30 a.m. because I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened. It's a Southern Gothic set in the Blue Ridge mountains in a mysterious mansion with eerie gardens where night flowers bloom. It's a mystery, a romance, a story of friendships, betrayals, and ultimately love and forgiveness. The three narrators develop the story beautifully as the alliances and mysteries unfold to the deliciously satisfying ending. I've loved Cassandra King's other novels, but this one is definitely , in my opinion, her best. I'd give it six stars if that were possible.
