My thoughts:
This is the second novel in the Hickory Hollow series, 'The Bridesmaid "I have read every single book written by Beverly Lewis so far and have not yet been disappointed.
The story revisits Joanna, the kind young woman who is introduced in "The Fiddler," the first book of this series. I enjoy reading stories of characters I've previously met in other books. It feels like you are visiting and old friend.
Joanna is and inspiring character with lots of faith. Watching her put all of her trust in God despite all the trails that kept coming her way.
I would of love to have seen Eben and Joanna get together in person more. The long distance relationship did somewhat make the story get drawn out. The majority of this story was about Joanna and not Eben. Overall, I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book in the story.
You do not need to read the first first book to read this one.
First, let me say that I have read every one of Beverly Lewis's series and have enjoyed them immensely. However, this book does not work on so many levels it's not funny. To begin with, the premise and main plot of the story, which is that Eben and Joanna cannot marry because he cannot move to Hickory Hollow is just absolutely unbelievable! This is a people that live, day in and day out, on their faith and their wholehearted acceptance of the Bible as the word of God and the guiding force of their lives. Why then, does it take the Wise? Woman until page 265 (out of 314), to quote The Book of Ruth? Why did she, the first time she met with Joanna, talk about "how easy it is to fall in love with a boy from here"? This whole idea just boggles my mind.
In a culture that lives by the Bible as the ultimate word of God the belief is that "a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home". So, since when is there a problem with a woman leaving her home to go with her husband? Seems mighty odd that, from the very beginning the expectation, even from Joanna's father, is that Eben would come to live in Hickory Hollow. Even more odd when you consider that he was the sole heir to a very successful farming operation run by him and his father. And the idea that Eben was counting on his brother to return and take over the farm after having "gone English", apparently successfully, for 2-1/2 years is just beyond belief. In my opinion, based on this premise, this is a book that never should have been written because it just doesn't make any sense.
Let's move on to the ultimate brat, little sister Cora Jane. Not only is her character totally unsympathetic, especially in an Amish novel, her character is completely undeveloped.
